Yes. Sweet Briar Police Officers are sworn law enforcement officers with full police authority and duties.
The boundaries of Sweet Briar College are just like the boundaries of your city. Within these boundaries, Sweet Briar College Department of Safety is the law enforcement agency of record. Sworn officers make arrests, cite traffic violations, take criminal reports and conduct criminal and accident investigations.
Officers must complete Basic Law Enforcement Training at the Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy in Salem, Virginia and be sworn-in by the Amherst County Circuit Court. They are vested with the same authority as the members of your local police department.
The department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Surveys have shown that at any given time of the day legal parking is available on campus. Although parking may not be as close to your destination as you might like, it is available. It takes a reasonably healthy person no more than 10 minutes to walk from the parking lots to any Academic, Administrative or Residential building.
In most cases an officer can assist in entering a locked car. Proper identification and signing a waiver is all that is needed.
The Department of Safety vehicles are equipped to jump-start most cars. Call 381-6144, give a description of your vehicle and its location on campus and the first available officer will respond to assist you.
Community involvement is very important in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment. Whether you come to the Department of Safety Office in person, call 381-6144, or use e-mail. The information you have may be very important in reducing crime on campus.
