Aircraft Disaster

 

Typical Problem:          Sweet Briar Student, Staff, or Faculty involved in an car, van, bus, or aircraft disaster elsewhere.

If the incident involved students of the JYF or JYS program, the Director of the Program would be included in the above team.

 

 

College Actions:

Main functions of the team would include communication both internal and external, event planning (memorial service, etc.), counseling with community members.

 

 


Fire

 

Typical Problem:          Fire Alarm or Actual Fire in a Campus Building

 

Typical Informant:        Information Operator, Campus Police Officer, Faculty Staff Member or Student

                                     Willie Neal – First Responder, Chief of Police

                                     Jonathan Green – Dean of the College

                                     Cheryl Steele – Dean Co-Curricular Life & Director of Health Services

                                     Paul Davies – Vice President for Finance & Administration

                                     Steve Bailey – Director of Physical Plant

                                     Adam White – Chaplain

 

College Actions:

  (Coordinated by Department of Safety)

1)    Determine from informant: the location of fire or alarm.

 

2)    Response – Alarm only (no flame or smoke)

a.     Department of Safety responds to the scene to investigate the alarm and determine the cause.

b.     If there is no indication of fire, alarm will be reset by the Campus Police Officer.  If the alarm will not reset, Physical Plant will be notified.

 

3)    Response – Evidence of Actual Fire

a.     Contact Amherst Fire Department

b.     The attached Evacuation Plan will be followed.

c.     Once on the scene, the Amherst Fire Chief is in charge of the situation until the fire is extinguished.

d.     The Point Person will be notified.

e.     Department of Safety will photograph and document damages prior to clean-up.  Officers will assist with initial investigation by Fire Department/SheriffÕs Office, as needed.

f.      If fire involves a Residence Hall, the Director of Residence Life will relocate evacuees to Prothro or the gym until it is safe to reenter the affected building.

 

4)    If an academic/administrative building is damaged, the Dean of the College and the Vice President for Finance and Administration will temporarily relocate classes or offices that are affected and insure notification to students and employees.

 

5)    The Department of Safety will ensure personal possessions are secured.

 

6)    Physical Plant will initiate facility clean-up and repair.

 

7)    Department of Co-Curricular Life will provide notification of student victim families.  The Dean of the College and Vice President for Finance and Administration will notify faculty and staff victim families respectively.

 

8)    The College Relations Office will be responsible for coordinating internal communication of an incident as well as any media releases for external audiences.

 

9)    Students, faculty, and/or staff in need of counseling services following the emergency will be referred to the ChaplainÕs Office, the Health Center or the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as appropriate.

Fire

Private Residence on Campus

 

Action Steps:

 

1)    The Officer in Charge and any other available security officers will proceed immediately to the residence.

a.     If the resident is present at the scene the officers will try to ascertain the following:

                                               i.     The number of occupants of the residence.

                                             ii.     Are all the residence accounted for?

                                            iii.     Are there any chemicals such as gasoline, etc. stored in the affected structure?

                                            iv.     Does the home have a gas hookup?

                                             v.     Where is the breaker box located in the affected structure?

b.     In the event that someone is still inside the affected structure, the Officer will assess the situation and determine if it is safe for them to enter the structure before the fire company arrives on the scene.

c.     The Officer will evacuate the residence on each side of the affected structure and any other residences that may be in danger.

 

 

2)    The Dispatch Officer will:

a.     Immediately notify Amherst County Officials of the fire.

b.     Will notify Linda Shank, the emergency team point person.

                                               i.     Will work with emergency team & volunteers to assist those displaced by the fire.

c.     Will call in off duty security officers as needed.

d.     If the incident occurs during weekday business hours, Physical Plant will be requested to immediately send a worker to the front gate guard house to direct emergency vehicles and personnel.  Another worker should be sent to the traffic circle for traffic control purposes.  Other available workers should be sent to the residence to assist the Security Officers in ÒcrowdÓ control.  If the incident occurs during evening or weekend hours, Steve Bailey should requested to bring in his on-call staff as needed.
