Typical Informant:         Campus Police Officer, Faculty/Staff Member, Residence Life/Student, Physical Plant Staff, Outside Agency

College Actions:

  (Coordinated by Department of Safety)

1)    Determine from informant, location, description of emergency, number of injured persons.

 

2)    Dispatch Campus Police Officers to the scene to assess the situation, assist in evacuation and secure the perimeter.  Notify Amherst Rescue and Fire Department, as needed.

 

3)    Notify Point Person

 

4)    Checkpoint will be opened to direct emergency response crews to the scene, providing access to authorized personnel only.

 

5)    Students, faculty, and staff will be directed to safe areas, typically Prothro Commons or the gym, if necessary.

 

6)    The Burnett Dining Room in Prothro Commons will be designated for use by the Health Center during the emergency.

 

7)    The Director of Health Services will coordinate treatment of any injuries.  The general protocol will include triaging injuries at the College when possible and coordinating transports to Lynchburg General Hospital or other appropriate medical facilities.

 

8)    If Rescue Squad vehicles are not sufficient for transport purposes, the Chief of Police or his designee will coordinate the use of campus vehicles and campus drivers for this purpose.

 

9)    The Telecommunications Office will activate the 381-HELP hotline to provide essential information to the employees and residents of the community.

 

10) The College Relations Office will be responsible for coordinating internal communication of an incident as well as any media releases for external audiences.

 

11) The Chief of Police or the Shift Commander will determine when the state of emergency ceases to exist and will coordinate return to normal activities.

 

12) Students, faculty, and/or staff in need of counseling services following the emergency will be referred to the ChaplainŐs Office, the Health and Counseling Center, or the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as appropriate.
