Civil Disturbance

 

Typical Problem:          A gathering of a large group of individuals who become disruptive, may result in property damage and/or injuries.

 

Typical Informant:        Student, Faculty Staff member, Campus Police Officer.

College Actions:

  (Coordinated by Department of Safety)

1)     Intervention by College Officials is required when the following elements are present at a gathering of a large group of people:

 

Classes are disrupted.

Time, place, and noise level is causing unreasonable disturbance.

Evidence of potential violence or vandalism is present.

 

2)    When intervention is needed to resolve the incident, the Department of Safety and Co-Curricular Life Staff will respond to the scene.  Group Leaders should be identified.  College Officials should attempt to reason with these individuals and solicit their cooperation in bringing the matter under control.  The Point Person will be notified by Campus Safety

 

3)    If efforts have failed, the President and the Vice President for Finance and Administration and the Dean of the College will be notified.

 

4)    Further police intervention may be required in cases of violence or destruction of property.  Use of force should be avoided, or kept at a minimum.

 

5)    The College Relations Office will be responsible for coordinating internal communication of an incident as well as any media releases for external audiences.

 

6)    Documentation and reports will be submitted to the appropriate parties.

 

7)    Students, faculty, and/or staff in need of counseling services following the emergency will be referred to the ChaplainŐs Office, the Health Center or the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as appropriate.
